How long do you want to live? That's the wrong question!

How long do you want to live? That's the wrong question. The right question is: how long do you want to live and be healthy ?

It's the difference between two concepts that are currently changing the entire view of aging. One is lifespan your total lifespan, the number of years you breathe. The other is healthspan your healthy years, that is, the time you are actually alert, mobile, clear-minded and independent.

And it is on the second point that it really determines how your life will turn out.

Two people, same age completely different lives

Imagine two men who both live to be 85. The first is strong and independent almost the whole way. He goes hiking at 75, plays with his grandchildren, takes care of himself and keeps his wits about him. The last years are shorter and heavier, but for the most part he lived life to the fullest.

The other lives the same number of years, but a completely different life. Already at 68, his body is failing. He spends the last fifteen years with pain, reduced mobility and a growing dependence on others. He lives but he does not live very well.

Same number on paper. Completely different lives. That's the whole point of healthspan: the goal is not just more years, but more good years.

Why the shift is happening now

For a long time, healthcare and research measured success in terms of longevity how old we get. And we have become good at it: average life expectancy has risen steadily. The problem is that we have not become as good at extending healthy years at the same rate. Many people gain years at the end of life, but often years marked by illness and impaired function.

Now the focus is shifting . More and more people scientists, doctors and ordinary people are realizing that the quality of years matters more than the quantity. It’s not about living forever, but about being strong and capable for as long as possible, and then having a short final downhill instead of a long one.

What you do after 50 determines

Here comes the most important message, and the good news: your healthy years are largely something you can influence yourself. And the years after 50 are the most crucial.

This is the time to lay the foundation for the coming decades. The four cornerstones are no secrets:

  • Strength and muscle: muscles are your insurance against frailty, falls and addiction. They are built and maintained through strength training, regardless of age.

  • Fitness and a strong heart: regular exercise keeps the cardiovascular system and brain in shape.

  • Real food: what you eat is the building material for a body that will last a long time.

  • Sleep and recovery: it is when you rest that the body repairs itself.

None of this is rocket science. But it's precisely these habits that separate the first man in the example from the second.

It's never too late.

A common objection is that the train has left that you should have started earlier. That is not true. The research is clear: the body responds to exercise and better habits at all ages. A 70-year-old who starts strength training is still building muscle. A 60-year-old who starts exercising is still lowering their risks.

Every healthy year you add is worth it. And the best thing you can do for your future self is to start today, not tomorrow.

Summary: Aim for the healthy years

Stop asking how long you can live. Ask how long you can live well . The shift from lifespan to healthspan is about taking back control using strength, movement, good food and rest to extend not just life, but the years when life is worth living to the fullest. It’s the wisest investment you can make after 50.
