The Stress Hormone That Steals Your Energy 11 Ways to Lower Cortisol Naturally

Sep 24
4 min read

Do you often feel on edge, sleep poorly and have trouble getting rid of belly fat? Then the culprit could be cortisol. Cortisol is the body's own stress hormone. In the right amount, it is absolutely necessary - it helps regulate blood pressure, sleep and energy. The problem arises when the stress never lets up. Then cortisol is constantly elevated, and that's bad news for a man over 50.

Long-term high cortisol increases the risk of depression, sleep problems and weight gain around the stomach. It also counteracts testosterone – your most important hormone for muscles, energy and desire. Simply put: when cortisol goes up, testosterone often goes down.

The good news? You can influence your cortisol levels yourself, without pills. Here are eleven proven ways.

1. Move every day

The easiest and most effective way to keep cortisol in check is regular exercise. A brisk 30-minute walk or a bike ride will go a long way. Exercise also releases your body's own "feel-good chemicals" like endorphins - which is why you feel calmer after a workout.

Haven't exercised in a while? Start slowly. Break up your exercise into three ten-minute sessions throughout the day. They count just as much.

2. Try calmer forms of exercise

All movement is good, but some forms have an extra calming effect. Yoga, tai chi and Pilates are about feeling how your body feels while you move – not about performing. Many men over 50 find that this type of exercise both softens stiff joints and reduces stress. Kills two birds with one stone.

3. Get out into nature

We Swedes have a huge advantage: the forest is almost always around the corner. And research shows that time in nature significantly lowers cortisol – whether you're taking a walk or just sitting on a stump and listening to the wind.

Aim for 20–30 minutes in a quiet environment, preferably a forest or park. And the longer you stay, the better. During the dark season, this is especially important, as daylight also helps both mood and sleep.

4. Eat foods that calm the body

High cortisol makes you crave fast carbohydrates and sweets, while also causing your body to store fat – especially around your stomach. A vicious cycle, in other words.

Break it by eating real, natural foods: vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and good fats from fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, avocados, and olive oil. At the same time, cut back on things that increase stress—too much coffee, alcohol, and added sugar.

5. Breathe deeply for real

It almost sounds too simple, but deep breathing is one of the fastest ways to calm your nervous system. Here's how:

  • Sit or lie down comfortably and breathe normally for one minute.

  • Then inhale deeply through your nose for four seconds, allowing your stomach to rise.

  • Hold your breath for four seconds

  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth for four seconds

Repeat for a few minutes. If you get dizzy – breathe a little easier. If you do this regularly, the effect will be stronger each time.

6. Stay connected with your friends

Loneliness isn't just boring – it actually raises your stress hormones and increases your risk of depression. Unfortunately, many men lose friendships over the years, when work and family take up all their time.

Make it a habit to check in. Call an old friend, book a coffee or a round of golf. Good friends help you through tough times, boost your self-confidence and make it easier to stick to healthy habits.

7. Learn techniques that calm you in the moment

When your mind wanders, there are simple tricks that work anywhere. Imagine a place where you feel safe and calm. Or break negative thought patterns by counting backwards or reciting the alphabet to yourself. Stretch your shoulders, put on some music you like. Small things – but they lower cortisol noticeably.

8. Laugh more

Never underestimate a good laugh. A good laugh can lower cortisol by up to 40 percent. Watch a funny movie, tell stories with your friends, or go to a stand-up show. Consciously adding more humor to your everyday life is actually one of the most enjoyable health interventions you can make.

9. Prioritize your sleep

There's a vicious cycle to watch out for here: stress makes it hard to sleep, and poor sleep in turn raises cortisol. What's more, testosterone drops when you sleep too little - yet another reason to take sleep seriously after 50.

Having trouble falling asleep? Try slow, calm breathing for five minutes. Or try what's called progressive relaxation: tense a muscle group as you breathe in, and relax as you breathe out. Start with your face and neck and work your way down to your feet. If your sleep problems persist – talk to your doctor.

10. Write off

Writing down your thoughts is an underrated tool. It doesn't have to be well-formulated – the point is to get out what's on your mind. Many people find that worries and ruminations lose their grip once they're on paper. Five minutes in the evening is enough.

11. Take breaks during the workday

Are you still working, or are you already busy? Take short breaks every hour. Stand up, stretch your shoulders, back and neck, take a walk around the block or just look out the window for a while. It sounds banal, but regular breaks reduce stress levels – and you'll also be sharper when you sit down again.

Summary: small habits, big impact

You don't have to do everything at once. Pick two or three things from the list and make them habits. Lower cortisol means better sleep, better mood, less belly fat – and better conditions for your testosterone.
