Inflammation can be both acute and chronic. When inflammation works well, it protects us from disease. When inflammation does not work properly, it can cause disease.
Acute inflammation, is a normal (like a sore throat from a cold) and a necessary process triggered by the immune system to fight infections. However, chronic inflammation, the type that lasts for months or years, can have serious consequences for your health, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease to name a few. People with these conditions often have higher levels of inflammation in the body.
Intermittent fasting reduces the immune system's inflammatory response and leads to improvements in diseases with chronic inflammation, but it does all this without compromising the body's ability to target infections.
Why do intermittent fasting work?
Research has found that Intermittent fasting reduces the number of "monocytes" circulating in the blood. Monocytes are highly inflammatory immune cells that can cause severe tissue damage and humans have seen an increasing amount in their blood circulation as a result of eating habits that humans have acquired in recent centuries.
Further studies showed that during periods of Intermittent fasting, these monocyte cells go into "sleep mode" and are less inflammatory than monocytes found in people who do not live with periodic fasting. High levels of these cells occur in cases of autoimmune diseases and certain other conditions.
The research also concluded that Intermittent fasting improves chronic inflammatory diseases without affecting the normal immune system's response to acute infections. In addition, as periodic fasting reduces inflammation, it can improve the symptoms of arthritis and even rheumatoid arthritis.
The study found that Intermittent fasting reduces the immune system's inflammatory response and leads to improvements in diseases involving chronic inflammation, but does so without compromising the body's ability to target infections.
