Sugar is a controversial food. As soon as you add sugar to anything, it will taste so fantastically good. I'm the first to admit that.
At present, there is no evidence that sugar is addictive. Surveys show that it is more an eating behavior that is the big culprit. It is often said that sugar is a reward for the brain, but it is all good food, not just sugar. What you have to get hold of is the constant reward you want to give yourself. With it comes a high price.
I see a difference in sugar addiction and cravings for sweets. I can feel for myself after Saturday (the day of the week that I eat all that I am craving) that on Sunday I have to sharpen up a bit. That my body wants sweeter. But on Monday it has calmed down and it is not as difficult anymore.
To curb cravings for sweets, I have some advice:
1. Move. It motivates you
2. Find new rewards that take you away from the candy bag
3. Eat regularly so as not to create unnecessary cravings
4. Drink plenty of water to not be hungry
5. Eat nuts / seeds as an alternative to sweets
6. Eat protein that satisfies you
7. Sleep enough, to sleep too little triggers sweet cravings
Good luck!
